Commissioned by Sultan Abdülmecid the Büyük Mecidiye Camii in Beşiktaş is Ottoman Baroque in style, famous for its low-hanging crystal chandeliers and natural lighting. Located near the first Bosphorus Bridge and Ortaköy’s famous Baked Potato vendors do pay attention to the calligraphies created by the Sultan himself.
Beautiful small mosque nestling on the banks of the Bosphorus in a bustling pier side setting in Ortaköy. Completed in 1854 and designed by the same architects as the nearby Dolmabahçe Palace. Almost Italianate in its interior with windows overlooking the water, huge low hung chandeliers and filled with light. My favourite mosque, albeit not that old.
The mosque is STUNNING and well-worth the trip, alone. It's very small, Boroque, and has a gorgeous view of the Bosphorous. If you're really into baked potatoes, there's that, too :) But go for the Mosque! The famous large ones are their own thing, but this is really something else. Special. Peaceful. And very very beautiful.
After along day and long walks all day… And strange thing at work… This is the end station for me tonight! A nice picture and then hotel.👍
While taking the Bosphorus tour we decided to end our tour in Ortakoy mainly because we had heard a lot about the amazing Bosphorus view from Ortakoy central plaza and this small beautiful mosque. The mosque indeed is very beautiful and very quiet. And you get an amazing view of Bosphorus and can also even see Camlica hill and Camlica mosque from here. But there is nothing else to do in Ortakoy. It's famous for its Kumpir but you can find equally good Kumpir in other parts of Istanbul as well. I would recommend travellers to go there only if you are staying in Istanbul for at least 5 days and have some time in hand to spend an evening here.
